Salary range: £33,410 to £42,380 per annum*
Full time, fixed Term appointment up to July 2017
Preferred starting date 1st November 2014
The Department of Computing is a leading department of Computer Science among UK Universities. It has consistently been awarded the highest research rating (5*) in Research Assessment Exercises (RAE).
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate at the post-doctoral level for the EPSRC funded project entitled CLOUD INTELLIGENT PROTECTION AT RUN-TIME. This project aims to develop novel techniques for intelligent cloud protection by advancing the state of the art analysis of attack scenarios and novel techniques for selecting countermeasures and remedial actions. The methodology adopted combines fundamental research on knowledge representation, probabilistic analysis and machine learning with empirical and experimental studies in an industrial test-bed environment. The project is in collaboration with British Telecom (BT) and the post holder will also spend time at BT.

To apply for this position, you will need to have a strong computing or engineering background, with knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas and techniques:
- Probabilistic/Bayesian inference, in particular for Markov-like models, such as belief-propagation, expectation maximisation and/or variational Bayes.
- Reinforcement learning or (approximate) dynamic programming, for Markov decision processes or POMDPs.
- Game theoretic approaches, in particular for repeated games, Bayesian games, stochastic games and/or Markov games.
- Probabilistic graphical models and graph based inference, in particular the learning of hidden Markov models.
-Regression and classification, in particular probabilistic methods, such as logistic regression, automatic relevance detection, and gaussian processes.

You must have a PhD (or equivalent) in an area pertinent to the subject area, i.e. Computing or Engineering. Candidates close to completion of their PhD will also be considered.*

You must have excellent communication skills, be able to organise your own work, and prioritise work to meet deadlines. Preference will be given to applicants with a proven research record in the relevant areas. All applicants must be fluent in English.

You will be part of the DSE Group, within the Computing Department, the Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research and the Institute for Security Science and Technology.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £29,350 – £32,520 per annum.
