Post-doctoral opportunities at the University of Edinburgh

The School of Mathematics at The University of Edinburgh is looking for three post-doctoral research fellows. See http://www.maths.ed.ac.uk/jobs.

1. Whittaker Research Fellow in Mathematics for Data Science
The School of Mathematics wishes to appoint a WHITTAKER RESEARCH FELLOW in MATHEMATICS FOR DATA SCIENCE. The fellowship is a fixed term contract for two years.

We are seeking outstanding candidates with a track record of research developing new mathematical or statistical methods for the analysis and processing of large-scale datasets. The candidates' research, which can be foundational or applied, will relate to themes that include (but are not limited to) structure identification, dimensionality reduction and machine learning. Successful candidates will connect with existing areas of expertise in the School of Mathematics and, more broadly, with relevant research within the University. They will demonstrate a strong independent research programme and will be committed to teaching. The successful candidates will join Edinburgh Data Science, a 1000-researcher network of excellence that coordinates the University’s activities in data science; they will have the opportunity to participate in the Centres for Doctoral Training ‘Data Science’ and ‘Maxwell Institute Graduate School in Analysis & its Applications.’

2. Whittaker Research Fellow in Mathematics for Industry or Business
The School of Mathematics wishes to appoint a WHITTAKER RESEARCH FELLOW in MATHEMATICS FOR INDUSTRY OR BUSINESS. The fellowship is a fixed term contract for two years.

We are seeking outstanding candidates with a track record of research in mathematics with demonstrable impact on industry or business (understood in their broadest sense). The candidates will have established industrial/business links, experience of collaborative work in an industrial/business environment, and a strong desire for furthering their engagement with industry/business. Successful candidates will connect with existing areas of expertise in the School of Mathematics and, more broadly, with relevant research with the University. They will demonstrate a strong independent research programme and will be committed to support the School in developing its industrial and business links. Applications by candidates with extended work experience in industry/business are particularly encouraged.

3. William Gordon Seggie Brown Research Fellowship in the Mathematical Sciences
Applications are invited for the WILLIAM GORDON SEGGIE BROWN Research Fellowship in Mathematical Sciences, tenable at the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. The Fellowship will run for a period of two years.

The successful candidate should show very considerable promise in research, and would normally have a PhD by the time of taking up the fellowship. The Fellow will pursue world-class research throughout the fellowship, as well as contributing to the teaching activity of the School of Mathematics. In the application, applicants must explain their current research interests and the research planned for the period of the fellowship.

The closing date for applications for all three fellowships is 8th December 2014. Interviews will be held in early January 2015 and you must be willing to take up the position on or before 1st September 2015.

Further details, including details of the application procedure are available on the School website: http://www.maths.ed.ac.uk/jobs.
