Postdoctoral Research Assistant "Bayesian Inference for Big Data with Stochastic Gradient Markov"

Postdoctoral Research Assistant "Bayesian Inference for Big Data with Stochastic Gradient Markov Chain Monte Carlo”
[Closing date: 18th March 2013]

The University of Bristol seeks an outstanding candidate for a research associate position tenable as early as possible before 28th February 2014, at a date to be agreed for a duration of 2 years. The position is one of three positions funded by an EPSRC funded collaborative project "Bayesian Inference for Big Data with Stochastic Gradient Markov Chain Monte Carlo” between the Universities of Bristol, and Oxford. The successful candidate will become a member of the Probability and Statistics Group within the School of Mathematics in Bristol. Candidates will be expected to have demonstrated outstanding research potential.

This joint collaboration between the Universities of Bristol (Prof. Christophe Andrieu) and Oxford (Profs Yee Whye Teh and Arnaud Doucet) aims to develop the methodological and theoretical foundations for new classes of Monte Carlo inference procedures for statistical inference that can scale to billions of data items, with a particular focus on unlocking the strengths of Bayesian methods for big data. In addition to close contacts with Profs Yee Whye Teh and Arnaud Doucet from Oxford the project will also be carried out in collaboration with Profs. Mark Welling and Babak Shahbaba (UC Irvine, US). Funding is available for visits to our US partners, between the two UK universities, and comes in addition to generous financial support to attend conferences.

The successful applicants should hold a PhD in Applied Probability or Statistics or cognate areas, and should be familiar with Monte Carlo methods or iterative stochastic procedures or the associated mathematical tools.

This post is advertised on a fixed term basis for two years. For more information on our fixed-term contracts policy please see: http://www.bris.ac.uk/hr/ftc.
