Welcome to GSNSI

The Department of Statistics and Operations Research of the University of Santiago de Compostela will host the Galician Seminar of Nonparametric Statistical Inference (GSNSI) from 8th to 9th June 2016.

Since the late 80s and early 90s, when a number of local Seminars on Nonparametric Inference were organized at the University of Santiago de Compostela by Prof. Wenceslao González Manteiga, the methodological development of Statistics with its application to different areas: Health Sciences, Finance, Energy, Computer Science, etc., became very fruitful. Since then, and in collaboration with the Universities of A Coruña and Vigo in the north and south of Galicia, already segregated, the organization of these seminars became international, with important international events in Nonparametric Inference in the three universities over the last 25 years. This was largely due to the influence of many of Prof. Wenceslao González Manteiga’s PhD students, who have become leading researchers in fields of Non-parametric Statistical Inference in the three Galician universities, with remarkable methodological developments and technology transfer activities.

On the occasion of the 60th birthday of Prof. Wenceslao González Manteiga, who has mentored 30 PhD students so far, this event is organized under the name "Galician Seminar of Nonparametric Statistical Inference (GSNSI)" with the aim of presenting in a series of lectures, the methodological developments of different research groups in Statistics in Galicia. Besides these lectures, invited speakers which had close collaboration with the Galician researchers will present their works. Obviously in a two-day seminar it is impossible to show all the research carried out by all the different members of the Galician groups and external collaborators. The intention is to provide a representative overview of the various groups, former PhD students supervised by Prof. Wenceslao González Manteiga and well-known researchers who have collaborated with Galician researchers over the last 25 years.

Because of the many topics addressed, the seminar may be of interest not only for former PhD students, but for actual PhD students in general and for the scientific community with interest in the research and applications of the statistical methodology.

We are looking forward to seeing you here, enjoying the conference and the city!
