Lectureship/Senior Lectureship in Medical Statistics

  • Ref:            A109
  • Department:        Medicine
  • Closing date:        7 November 2008
  • Salary:          Lecturer/Senior Lecturer grade 8 or 9, £37,835 - £50,846
  • Description:        Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Medical Statistics

Applications are invited for a permanent Lectureship or Senior Lectureship in Medical Statistics within Lancaster University’s Division of Medicine. The Division is one of three in a new School of Health and Medicine, the others being Health Research, and Biomedical and Life Sciences. Work in statistical methods is expected to grow alongside other activities within the School and in collaboration with other university departments, colleagues in NHS Trusts and other public sector agencies locally, nationally and internationally.

The appointee will be expected to take a prominent role in the delivery of the statistical aspects of Lancaster University’s contribution to Health Research Design Services North West (RDS). This programme of work is funded by the National Institute for Health Research to provide advice on research design to NHS and University staff in developing proposals for external research funding from competitive peer-reviewed sources. The region-wide service consists of a central coordinating hub based at Lancaster University and three local academic networks based in Cumbria and Lancashire, Mersey and Cheshire, and Greater Manchester. Many of the research proposals developed under the RDS programme require statistical input to both design and analysis, and provide opportunities to build, by mutual agreement, collaborative research links that go beyond the service function covered under the RDS contract.

The appointee will also contribute to the research in the Department of Medicine currently being undertaken by a group that includes Professor Peter Diggle, a lecturer in Epidemiology in addition to the current vacancy, an MRC Research Fellow, three other post-doctoral researchers and five research students. The appointee will be expected to conduct their own programme of research in statistical methods relevant to applications in the biomedical, clinical and health sciences, and to develop collaborative research with other groups in cognate areas. Current methodological research interests within the group include: spatial and spatio-temporal statistical models and methods; longitudinal data analysis; hierarchical modelling. Current application areas include: real-time disease surveillance; environmental exposure measurement; tropical disease prevalence mapping; infectious disease modelling in human and veterinary epidemiology; longitudinal studies in cardio-thoracic surgery, cognitive psychology, mental health and renal medicine.

The post is available at either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level, according to the qualifications, experience and track-record of the successful candidate.
